Visualizing Type Project

For this class we were tasked with visualizing the content of a spoken poem. The poem I was given was a very hypnotic poem, consisting only of the word “zero” being said over and over at various speeds and tones. As you go through the poem the words start to become white noise that can’t easily be focused on and the sound almost becomes overwhelming.

The piece I made had to convey that white noise visually or else it wouldn’t work. The process began by finding a font that replicated the same static look that’s associated with white noise. The text of the poem was then written out in this type and then the text was then overlaid on itself over and over to replicate the busy and indecipherable feel of the poem. On top of the whole piece a series of zeros aimed to capture the hypnotic aesthetic of the poem.
